What a Sanborn map shows

Sanborn maps were drawn for fire insurers. Each sheet shows every building's footprint, colored by what it was built of (pink for brick, yellow for wood frame, blue for stone), with its number of storeys, its street number and, for shops, mills and churches, what went on inside.
